Methodological Observations of 28 Health Interview Surveys Performed During the Past- 16 Years

Abstract
The methodologies adopted in 28 healths interview surveys which used generally populations -were analyzed and discussed. Only those researches which were published in academic journals since 1960 were included in this study.
Following results were observed from this study.
1. In general, the objective of- the study was not clearly expressed.
.2. The content of studies included all or part of demographic characteristics, morbidity
patterns, utilization and its determinants of medical facilities; medical care cost and
other socioeconomic environment.
3. Majority- of studies was performed in rural area and-4 studies performed included urban and rural area.
-4. Only 3 studies were done for all 4 seasons.
5. In most- of cases sampling frame was unclear and only few cases calculated sampling error. Z.- The concepts of health and disease were not clearly defined. A few cases reported disability days.
-7. Inmost of cases 2 weeks recall period were adopted. The period was not usually classified as acute and chronic. 11 cases visited houses only once-to obtain information.
"8. Wordings of the questionnaire were not standardized and only initial probing question was applied to confirm incidence of diseases
9. In most of cases the respondent of the interview was the housewife who answered all
the diseases occurred her family members. Only one case interviewed all the members
of family. The interviewees were mostly health personnel¢¥s.
10. The International Classification of Diseases was applied for ¢¥the classification of diseases. The ICD was found out to be not feasible for the classification of diseases derived from the interview survey.
11. In most of cases, the identification of determinants-¢¥6f--¢¥health institute utilization was based on the simple cross tabulation. Only one case applied, the multiple regression analysis for this purpose.
12. The definitions of variables such as age, marriage, level of education, occupation, income and etc. were usually not clearly defined.
In conclusion, it was almost not possible to do a ¢¥comparative study with these research results (data).
